Reading about how many tickets have sold and how many are left . I must admit I got a little buzz ! And that jump started me into thinking about how this following all started ! I thought about all the fans from all over the place / world ! who will be descending on Birmingham Symphony hall in November , all who have booked tickets, Hotels, boats, trains and planes! all of us far and wide who are so looking forward to seeing Steve perform those First 2 Albums, Human Menagerie and Pyscomodo, with the swan orchestra and choir . An airing of those first 2 master’s surrounded with orchestral arrangements and choral support has always been a life long Dream .

I started thinking about way back when I first bought them Albums and I just turned down memory lane , it’s a fantastic place to go when there’s not much left in this day and age to rejoice in.
So ! come with me for a while if you like ? to a place that was full of sunshine and laughter and far off dreams.

You may get bored , but that’s ok, it may amuse some ! have a laugh at me spelling and grammar ! Or it may help some of you recall when and where they first discovered something special . For me it was music, it’s raining again, not much sunshine around here today . Take a step back with me to some of my sunny days , to when and where it all began for this Fan. How I Discovered this diverse and somewhat exotic unusual Music :

Back in the 70’s we had a News agents ! Well Mum and Dad did, so a typical day for Deborah was to be dragged out of bed at some unearthly hour of the day! 5.30 ish in the morning ! to go to open up the shop with said parents, help mark up the papers, serve customers , ( usually lorry drivers, popping in for bakki and papers! ) and do one or two paper rounds depending on who did ! or didn’t ! turn up to do their’s !

There was always going to be some boy who wouldn’t turn up! So I would get their round to do as well as my own , then I’d have to walk miles home afterwards ! Well it seemed mile’s ! it took well over Half hour to walk home to get ready for school !

I’d sit in the shop half asleep most mornings and look up and scan the jars of sweets , up on the shelves. Rows and rows of them big square glass jars with black screw on lids, in regimental rows , stacked high above each other, so high, that I needed at set of steps to reach the ones on the top shelf.
sherbet pips, peanut crunches, rhubarb n custards, lemon bon boms, ( I always liked the white and pink ones best ), peppermint creams oh and barley sugar twists , black jacks , fruit salads , sugar mice, cough candies and victory V’s , hum bugs, coconut tobacco stuff , jars upon jars of sweets. ( I was a kid in a sweet shop )

Then there were the magazines, and music papers. I would scan through them daily, Jackie, Disc 45, Look-in, Fab , Oh and then there were the music papers ! Melody Maker, the NME , and some other one ! Now what was is ? Oh yeah Sounds .

I would flick through them , while waiting for my paper round to be marked up and my paper bag to be filled to bursting point with daily telegraphs, financial times, daily expresses‘, suns , daily mails , My weekly , TV Times, peoples Friend. Vanity Fair and various magazines the clientele of Harpenden desired dropped on their door mat’s.

After traipsing the streets with my heavy load, I’d head of back home a good half hour walk to get ready for school , I’d get back home about 8 O’clock just in time to catch Radio one’s record of the week. Some times I’d miss the 8 o’clock one, but it would be on again in another half hour, half 8! Or just after the news so 8.35ish, sometimes I’d hang about to hear it. my school was a 10 minet walk away and registration was 8.45.

Are you bored yet ?
Well Anyway !
Sometime around March April or was it February March 1974 ? ( I should know this )
Anyway ! I know it was spring time, I’d retuned back home one bright sunny morning from doing me paper round, and I was outside , in the back garden filling the water bottle up on the rabbit hutch , the sun was shinning , and the radio was on .
I walked back into the house and this was when this amazing sound came from out of nowhere! It was like nothing I’d ever heard before , A sound that pulled me into its zone, this sound seemed to be rising from a deep place, it’s soft low swirl of sound , built ! Rose up and up! Louder and louder it arose like sunrise , with warmth ! warm rising , getting hotter and hotter ! up and up rising like my blood pressure , pulse racing stuff it was . Tapping into my senses, tuning me into every note! Something special had found its way into my world that day. touched me .

What was that ? This sound was tapping into my senses , grabbing my attention and leading me into a some sort of state of delightful feel good happy feeling ! No , honest ! it had got me, I was bouncing around as soon as it hit the air.

Every time! Every time I heard this tune I would stop and listen! the first few times I caught it , I was genuinely put out that I’d missed who it was by, or what it was called!

What is that?

Who is that? I’d rummage through my 13 year old mind ! To find a clue !

Knew in an instant, I just loved that beat ,

but who is it? ( you may want to skip this bit ! Its only about my previous musical lessons )

I’d say I’d grown up on a wide range of music in our house hold, me being the youngest of 5. My older brothers and sisters spread their teen age dreams through the 60’s ! so the record player was always on in the bedrooms with their records , I knew all the Rolling Stones stuff , Beatles, Dylan, Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Beach boys , Sandi Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Cliff , Elvis , Motown, (loads of motown ) . Ah the Drifters and the Four Tops, Diana Ross & the Supreme’s, ( Baby love was embedded in me ) oh and “ Ask any Girl ! The Supremes ! ( put that in you tube and listen to the words ) nothing but heartache ! My world is empty with out you babe ! From the age of 3 I was dancing along to those tunes .Stoned Love .
Mum would always put her Classical stuff on the radiogram in the front room. ! Puccini, Beethoven , Debussy , the planets by Holts, oh ! And Greensleaves ! ah yes, that was the place for me ! oh and Tommy Steal ! Now there’s a tune! little white bull !

Anyway ! Fast forward to 73-74

Bowie , Bolan and Bob Marley where being bought into the house by now !

I’d had Stevie Wonders , “you are the sunshine of my life” bought for me by my elder sister , for my 12th birthday. and apart from that I just had to make do with the radio or what records my elder siblings were bringing home from their Saturday outings to town. I adored all the soul tunes, happy un lifting tunes most of them, most full of sad words, Ah but how could you not fail to dance and smile when Barry white sang “ you’re my first , my last , my everything ! chairman of the board, give me just a little more time ! And .Archie bells and the Drells Here I go again . Roberta Flack, Killing me softly.

I remember I acquired Mike Oldfield’s Tubular bells from somewhere ! and a brilliant Album called First Base by Babe Ruth, made its way into the house, Mum and Dad knew Dick Powel the drummer ( think he was one of their paper boys at some point ) anyway ! he had given them a copy of it for me. And a demo ( not for sale ) of Wilson Pickets “sweetest feeling “ to see if we would give it a listen and rate it hit or miss ! He was working for some record company at the time.
oh and I bought an LP called The First Twelve sides! recordings of a young 16 year old gospel singer ! Her name was Aretha Franklin. brilliant LP which I still cherish to this day. Made claim to as mine and stowed it away in my bedroom. Along with Bowies Ziggy Stardust. ,

Bet your really bored now !

Ok back to Harley then.

I’d walk to school and say to me mates “Oi “!
“have you heard that song about , errr !
a Queen of the scene! Or something?
Something like that !

Rag doll amour! You know! It’s radio 1’s record of the week .
its a really catchy, happy song.
Quite unique! sounds like nothing else.
not like anything I’ve ever heard before.

I’d relay the tune to my by now totally uninterested mates, who were walking faster and faster to get away from me by now ! ( And I very much doubt it was to get into class before the bell went ! )
they had no souls ! They were bay city roller fans . All of them !
I‘d call up the street “ you must have heard it ? “ it’s magic !

“ Well when you hear it ! you’ll know what I’m on about “.

I remember I Sat in class that week , and that tune would not go from my head. All day . All day long !!! It would not go away.
And I’d just want to get home , so I could put the radio on and wait for to hear that voice again.

I kid you not .

I wouldn’t even go off out with me mates after school, not to the park or shops or anything! till I’d heard it again, and as the soon as it started to play my heart would flutter ! It flew, and I’d run and turn the radio up, try and catch more of the words.

I was intrigued ! What’s this

Judy teen the Queen of the scene ,
she’s rag doll amour. ( What’s Amour ? )
“In from New York”
Prompted. Her. To Talk!
Of super …………..What ?
bowls!
Bulls?
Boles?
What?
Super , what?

Then them sweet strings would swoon in take hold and lift you higher as the voice told the story of how

She took us on a carrousel! She made us smiled And oh how we laughed!
Together riding ? On a Quest ? it was swell ? ( or did I hear a crest of a wave ! It was swell ? )
We stole her face
Lace?
Face ?
What did she steal ? Faith ?
and oh how we laughed !
she made us Happy!

What’s he singing about???????? ’
Who? What ?
Subtle blues and various hues ,
she did what ?
Capered ?
To draw me ! What’s capered ?

Me and janky ? ( Or Was that yanky ? )
oh hanky panky ! Seldom she bored me !

Shez ! ( She’s ) so bold
and me felling Ole ?
What’s that’s ? OLD ?

Just stroking her , ace ? Face ?
Super trooper , your he ?
can show her more than her lace ?

What He was singing and what I was hearing , was most probably two different things ?
I was intrigued !

But Oh Judy! Judy teens , the Queen of the scene ,
she’s a Rag Doll Amour !
What’s Amour ? ( Look I was only thirteen )

And he sang that he knew where she’d been ! and her ego was insane !

All I knew is that plucky tune, picked out on violin strings , grabbed my attention and carried me away in to a place I’d never been. the sweet violin strings drew me into a world I wanted to explore. And as for The voice ! It was something else . haunting.
I was hooked !

Jonny Walker (I’m sure it was him doing the breakfast show then! )

I recall by the time timeless flight was due for release 75-76 JW had moved from the breakfast shows to the lunch time radio one shows

I know this for sure coz I skipped of school at lunchtimes , for a whole week . Got me self into so much trouble with my Art teacher. ( Double lesson after Lunch )

I’d be down there on the school field with me radio cassette player to listen to , and hopefully record Johnny Walker talking to my by then hero Steve Harley ( yeah I not only had him all over the bedroom walls , but I also had him on me dressing table in a framed picture frame ! )

They ( JW and SH ) were reviewing the new album Timeless Flight via the telephone from the other side of the world! Well LA ! , they would talk over the air ways via the telephone, trans Atlantic stylie ! and played tracks from it around 1.o.clock all week ! I remember me tape jammed in the cassette player on the Friday and I was gutted ! But I fixed it. I know how to cut and splice ! The cellotape afterwards always used to pick up all the dirt from the head player and I’d have this muffled silenced waffalie bit in the gap where there was no recorded tape and the coz I’d stretched it pulling it out of the tape player!
Johnny Walker’s voice would speed up and sound like a dahlik for a few seconds on the tape ! Not quite Alan parsons stylie J quality ! Hmmm !

Are you bored yet ?
You still reading this drivel ?

Well anyway !

I will Never forget hearing the piano intro at the beginning of All Men are Hungry , for the very first time, on that radio 1 Lunch time show.
Needless to say ! I was late back from the field every day that week, I got in so much trouble ! My teachers thought I was such a rebel! But that’s another story !
Random moment ! sorry off on tangent !

anyway !
Back to Radio One’s record of the week !

The breakfast show in 73 I’m sure It was Jonny Walker who first told me ;-) over the air waves that all next week, on the breakfast show.
That his record of the week would be this brilliant record that I’d been catching bits of here and there and that had actually captured my soul. It Hit me like a train. Stopped me dead in my tracks , every time I caught it playing on the radio..

And it was called wait for it !

Judy Teen by COCKNEY REBEL! Cockney who?

Ahhhh! so that’s what it’s called!
Judy Teen,
ah yes she made us happy!

Well that was it! Something had deeply & solidly lodged in me. From then on, All my paper round money was spent on any and every magazine book or paper that had a mention of Cockney rebel in them, NME, SOUNDS, MELODY MAKER everything was gone through , cover to cover before I would even set foot out side of the shop , to do my paper round!

Well ! them news papers in my bag that week got thrown in porches and shoved through letter box’s with not a care in the world ! even if the front page’s of most of them where ripped to shreds. I had to get home , and quick. before radio 1’s record of the week was on.

For a whole week I was late for registration, at school. And the first airing of radio ones record of the week at 8 O’clock was not merely enough ! besides I had some days managed to miss the beginning of it, at 8 O’clock, ( even though I’d rushed the paper round , and run home ) so I’d have to wait for the next airing , in half hours time. , but like I said! The next play, was always after the news , so was never dead on at half 8. More like 8.40 - 45

So guess who was late for registration! At 8.45. That Steve Harley got me into so much trouble at school you know !

I even resorted to tracking down anyone in school who might have a tyranny at break time! to see if I could catch it again in first break, on Tony Black bums ! ( burns ) show, or was it Daddy David Hamilton’s ? well who ever it was ?

I just couldn’t get enough , had to hear it again, The rhythm was fine ! was just desperate to work out the rhyme ! and then ! oh my God ! Top of the pops ! When I heard it coming out of the telly in the back room on a that Thursday night , the world stopped, nothing and no one existed bar a wooden square box with a domed glass screen, not even the cream and gold plastic aerial that sat on the top of that box existed, just a bunch of Guys and an unforgettable vision ! ( but they all had guitars ! Where’s the drums ? ) The Voice now had a face , a body , which seemed to be all arms and hands gestures ! Ah ! And for Such Gestures ! ( one could fall hopelessly in love , for a life time )

He sang that song about Judy Teen, and that tune that had been haunting me from it’s very first invasion. There was this Boy dressed in a black cap sleeved T-shirt , baggy trousers and a Bowler hat ! Wow ! He Had a girl sat at his feet and I so wanted to be her . Oh wow. I would sit at his feet any time ! Why ! I’d Even wash them and dry them with my own hair !

So that was that !
I was always Hungry for more , and he fed us well, by the time Judy teen was at N0 5 in the British charts I had discovered both The Human Menagerie, and Psychomodo Albums .
Oh my lord ! I was mesmerised listening to them Albums so much going on in them.
I had discovered real music , and it was mine, no one else’s . I was listening to my records now. They were mine , not my sisters, not my brothers, not my mum or dads, not even my mates ! They were mine, all mine. My Choice.

I was busy collecting all the news and reviews from the NME and Melody Maker and any thing else I could lay my hands on, oh ! And wow ! I got a ticket for my 14th birthday 17th of May to go see Cockney Rebel Live at st Albans Civic centre ( now the Arena ) on the 26th 0f May wow how lucky was I ? so excited . Or was it the 29th ? Hmmmm! I’ll have to search deep ! Its in there some where ! But anyway !

Mr soft shortly followed Judy Teen, in no time into the charts and was at no 3 resulting in more dates being added to the already enormous tour, Yay ! ( another date for st Albans added ) magic ! Their coming back J in June . Brilliant.
Yes ! Of course I went to that one too .

From then on I watched and listened , followed the path Cockney Rebel were on, I tuned into radio Luxemburg and Caroline in the dead of night to keep up with those European maids , that were so hard to ignore, I longed to go to the big city dates on the tour Liverpool , Manchester , the London Gigs , Hammersmith Odeon , but I was only a mere slip of a girl besides the parents would never allow it let alone afford it !

No I had to find more jobs to do , and wait another year maybe.
I‘d Just sit in my bedroom night after night while the tour was making its way round the country and put on the
albums and wonder what they were singing ? if they were singing bed in the corner or sling it yet ? at around 8.30 most evening. I’d Paint my face ( play at putting make up on ) and shut the gate ! ( the bedroom door ) No ones coming home till late ! ( I was growing up with Steve Harley ) on a journey . He’s been with me most of my life I grew up on him. Mind you it is sometimes debatable if I ever grew up at all!!! I still feel like a little kid when I hear him. To this day , when I hear the beginning of Judy teen it takes me back to a sunny morning in the garden just out side our back door , I can still see the leaves on the trees dappled with that morning sun light , sunshine dancing through them and the gentle breeze. Vivid.

I cried when I looked down at the bottom shelf where the music papers laid in mum and dads shop, one cold and desperate morning I looked down and picked up the Melody Maker from the bottom shelf , and remember as clear as day them words jumping out at me, REBEL SPLIT .

My heart sank, to be honest, I was so disheartened , so disappointed, but I kept up, reading festival was looming , Steve Harley and Cockney rebel were billed. Wished I could of gone , but it was impossible for me, my location, age , finance, but I was there in spirit, always have been always will be. I was over the moon and so excited when I read Steve had gone into the studio with Stuart Elliot and laid down a single for release , called Big Big Deal. I was straight down the record shop in station road and ordered it before it come out, The Guy in diamond stylist the record shop down station road in Harpenden knew me by now! I’d begged for the posters of cockney rebel out of his store , plagued him to death to get Sebastian single for me , even though it was on the Album, ( had to hear the B side )
He would order me in BIG BIG DEAL in and that he would have it for me to collect the day it come out.

I don’t think I’d played a record so much , I just kept putting it on , over and over again, listening to it tease me as it started and gave up a wall of what sounded like a huge body of mail voices ! A choir ! And then the dead stop. the split second stop ! The wonder ( That would last a life time ) of what was coming in the next line! What was that ?
Oh here we go again !
Who was a foolish boy ? Who felt a stab in their heart, it was another of them songs I really had to listen to over and over again , and then I got hungry again, I’d play the B sides, I had 4 now, rock n roll parade, spaced out, and such a dream.! Bed in the corner didn’t really count though as a bonus as it was on the album. It was a long cold lonely winter waiting . I paid attention, Patricia Paay and Yvonne keeleys were sister’s they were connected , Yvonne recorded Loretta’s tale and bed in the corner, stairway to heaven and unit 4 + 2 concrete and clay you know that song,
“ you to me ,
are sweet a roses in the morning !
“ you to me , “
“ are soft as summer rain, at dawn, in love we share, that’s something rare !
The side walks in the street !
the concrete and the clay , beneath my feet
Begin to crumble
But love will never die
Because we’ll see the mountains crumble
Before we say good bye
My love and I will be in love eternally’
Mmmm
that’s the way
Oh that’s the way its ment to be

They’ve got the original on you tube by unit 4+2 but not Yvonne Keeleys. ( she’s on their with old lord Fitzgerald or what ever his name was ) if I had words !
what’s his name ? oh god I’ll have to go find out now, its bugging me……

Ahh! SCOTT that’s it ! Scott Fitzgerald

Well anyway ! I know your bored now ! Are you still reading this drivel ? ramble ?

Well anyway ! About Ms Keeley , ( the man in diamond stylist ordered me up them 45’s hers and her sisters ) its a shame ! I cant find them on you tube. coz I loved them covers she did of Steve’s . I still have them on a 45’s but I can never play them again as they was left on the window sill in my bedroom along with most of my cockney rebel 45s in the summer 0f 75 or 76 and they were all ruined ! The heat of the sun streaming through the windows melted and warped them all, but I wouldn’t chuck them away.. ( much to Ms Morrison’s annoyance )
she would have me chuck them in the bin as quick as look at them, saying “ Deborah de clutter ! “
Many a time she’s picked them up and looked at me with despair at the uselessness of them in my life !
I did say “ well they would make quite nice bowls for something ! “
if they were maybe heated up a little more ! “ peanuts ? Olives ?

Random, sorry gone off track slightly, but that’s me all over.

So, up until Come up and see me ( Make me smile ) or is it Make me smile ! ( come up and see me ) ? slammed in to No 1 spot and Best years of our lives came out Human Menagerie and psychomodo were all I had. ( oh and the 4 singles with B sides ) It seemed like a life time waiting for that 3rd album, and yes I had it on order as soon as I read it was recorded .

Had about 3 jobs on the go by now , hair dressers after school Friday nights and all day Saturday, during the evening in the week I was in the local chip shop ( hated that one ) oh and another paper round one evening after school for the local review paper

I had to . well if I was going to go to Wembley . I was gonna have to earn the funds to get there . ( I know ! Dreadful English ! Gonna ! But it’s the way I say it ! )

I blame that Steve Harley for distracting my English lessons , they were the double lessons most morning’s first thing ! Which I was almost always late for !

Think Mum and Dad had , had enough of me clearing them out of customers orders ! And that some of their customers where complaining about not receiving the whole paper ! Bits were missing L
well I didn’t know !

Anyway !
I HAD some cracking Scrap books though , didn’t miss a thing. ( HAD being the operative word ! )
that’s another story , cant go there now ! its far too painful, even now . Just thinking about it .

Amazingly!
Mum and Dad allowed me to go to London on a train to Wembly , with a mate. I Must have only been 15 still, .
What date was Wembley ?
Ah April 14 76 . Yeah so I was just coming up 16 in the May . It was Awesome.
I’ll never forget how high the speakers where stacked either side of the stage , Huge great things, cables and stuff all over the place , and the smokie dry ice being shot out across the stage and the lights , Jims hair Back to the farm was when the lights lowered and the stage was covered in a smoky swirling blanket of dry ice , dripping in swaths falling off over the edge of the stage into the ordinance below. I was on the right hand side to the stage as you look towards the stage. not quite half way back and just over half way up the side tears, had a view.
Yvonne was on stage backing up on vocals I know they ( backing vocals ) were on the right hand side of the stage looking towards it , left hand side looking from the stage , , I remember Panorama because the Girls were doing the vocals and I had to stretch my eyes to see, I was singing along with them I never knew what feeling 45 would be like then, singing along ! just thought it was well old ! Ha and now she’s 52 , well ancient. and I’m sure Jim was on the same side of the stage as the girls? But that would assume Barry’s place now ! And George Ford was on the other side, Robbie side now. I don’t like it when something’s not quite clear , it should be but I’m doubting my memory ! I seem to think Lindsey was on stage on percussion.

I’d bought my pride and Joy Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel scarf to Wembley with me .It was turquoise satin and white with a picture of Steve , George. Duncan, Jim and Stuart as a group at either end of the scarf ( think Steve and Stuart were both wearing sun glasses ) and it had white tassels fringing at either end, I loved my scarf ( Roz from the very First Fan Club sent me that ! ) but I lost it some where between the empire and the subways .
On the way out of Wembley there were thousands of people coming out of the stadium that night and it fell off some where , ( maybe the phantom of the tube station picked it up ) are you reading this Mark ? J
it was crammed, going down to the under ground the tubes were jam packed , and to top it all I had stiletto’s on and a pencil skirt !
A wicked little suit I’d found in a second hand charity shop in Harpenden, it was a proper 1940’s polka dot suit, little jacket that fitted like a glove and I had a white satin pillow box hat with a net that just covered my eyes, so ! I’m tottering around in these bloody high heels and pencil skirt down on the tube being jostled and push n shoved in that heaving crowd chanting those immortal line “ Oh dear ! Look what they’ve done to the Blues the blues the blues “ like a load of football hooligans and I’ve lost me scarf ! Gutted. Some one , must of picked it up ! my scarf . I KNOW ! Someone’s got my scarf ! But they are only the Keeper of Deborah’s scarf!
Its not legally theirs.
They are only custodians of it !

You know I still Look on e.Bay from time to time 1 hoping one might turn up on there , but then I think, not a chance! why would anyone who’s got one, would get rid of something so precious. Na!

Mmmmm, cant wait for November

Ha Ha ! Guess what ? Since finishing writing this ramble it’s now my Birthday ! 17th May 2012 No concert to go too this May ! No ticket for my birthday this time but hey !

oooooh I’m still so excited !

I got my seat in a Hall with a view

I’m Going To THE SYPHONY HALL in November to see STEVE HARLEY and COCKNEY REBEL perform The HUMAM MENAGERI and THE PYSCHOMODO

AND
I CANT WAIT J

AND

I’ve only gone and found a scarf on eBay ! J now its not mine ! This ones Yellow with Red Tassels ! And just a picture of Steve on each end ! Its Not the one I lost , at Wembley. L But hey !
guess who’s now got an original Steve Harley scarf from the 70’s to wear to Birmingham ? Magic.

Hope I don’t loose this one in the crowd ! Its going to be a big one ! Oh hear the crowd roar for more !

I’m like a kid in a sweet shop !

Great story, Pandorah. My own first SH experience came at Hammersmith Odeon, as was, they played 3 nights in '75 after Make Me Smile (I'm pretty sure) and we left the place, all singing "Oh Dear Look What They've Done To The Blues, Blues, Blies" on thre underground train. Hundreds, all chanting - magical time !!

If you Google Steve Harley on EBay, there's a Jackie mag from the 70s poster, and the signature is a definite phoney.
Just wondering, do any of you buy SH stuff like the guys and the scarf story. and do you know the real signature from the copies? This Jackie mag one is obvious, but I've never read any Forum threads about such a thing. The scraf story got me thinking about memop stuff, so I checked it out. Mostly records and CDs - no scarves!!! Shame.
