Did you or any freinds/family see any of those shows? It has aalways intriqued me how Steve didn't become a huge star over the pond. He has all the singer-songwriter gifts and sincerity they love so much.
No, I never saw him.
In 1976 I was driving around the US for 9 months with a friend. At the end of our adventure, she went back to Laguna Beach in California and got married, and I ended up going to the Florida Keys to live for 7 years. I had never even HEARD of Steve Harley until last November when a Facebook friend posted a video of him singing "Make Me Smile", which in turn caused me to turn to YouTube where I saw all manner of brilliant songs by him and turned me into a BIG fan. No one I know has heard of him, either. Something is just wrong in the fabric of space that he never had a real career in the US.
I feel cheated that I did not get to "grow up" with him and his band. I, too, am flabbergasted that Steve did not make it over here; it just makes no sense. Maybe his timing was wrong, I don't know. I still think he could be a big star over here, there is just no reason why not. Some British stars don't translate over here (Cliff Richard is an example), but I don't think Steve fits that category. So, that is why I am in the process of rooting out every CD I can find that he ever made. The songs from the 70s still hold up now, it's amazing, and his newer songs would go over very well, I think. Steve, think of playing the Concord Pavillion in Northern California someday, why don't you.
I'd LOVE to see you here.
