Hi Maelitta,
I was listening to 'Back To The Farm' at 33.3RPM on my record player in 1975 with a school friend of mine and we both thought the deep slow sound in the background, was out of context with the rest of the musicality of the song. In a moment of inspiration we played the track at 45RPM and to our amazement the hidden message started to reveal itself. My record player also had a 78RPM speed, so we gave that a go as well and nearly freaked out when the message came through:
'If you play this at 78 it makes more sense now, doesn't it?'
Just a one off I was sure many of the dedicated Harley fans posting on this website would have also discovered, hence my original comments at the start of this thread, asking who else did this and ruined a stylus or two !!!
Rightly or wrongly I got the impression that 'Back To The Farm' was about madness and the farm was an asylum of sorts, so only a madman would play this song at 78RPM. That kind of makes sense to me, but perhaps the more learned Harley scholars on this website could post their interpretation of this song. I'd be very interested to hear.
I would also love to hear from Steve his thoughts and the rationale behind this hidden message. Oh, for an audience with Steve Harley and the questions we would ask!!!
Cheers,
Snowy
