Amazing!! thank you girls, and especially Maelitta. Is Steve saying
"Play it at 78 - it makes more sense that way"? great dsicovery, thanks again!

EssexBoyBilly, That's what it sounds like to me... or "play THIS at 78" (same difference)

Sadly, the whole 'get the turntable down from the attic' idea came to nothing

My day will come though!

Tell me something, Snowy, I'm curious ... I'd like to know how you came up with the idea there was a hidden sentence in Back to the Farm ?

How did you have the idea of playing this title at 78 RPM ?

Did you do that with other songs ?

Is it a kind of a hobby for you ?

Hi Maelitta,

I was listening to 'Back To The Farm' at 33.3RPM on my record player in 1975 with a school friend of mine and we both thought the deep slow sound in the background, was out of context with the rest of the musicality of the song. In a moment of inspiration we played the track at 45RPM and to our amazement the hidden message started to reveal itself. My record player also had a 78RPM speed, so we gave that a go as well and nearly freaked out when the message came through:

'If you play this at 78 it makes more sense now, doesn't it?'

Just a one off I was sure many of the dedicated Harley fans posting on this website would have also discovered, hence my original comments at the start of this thread, asking who else did this and ruined a stylus or two !!!

Rightly or wrongly I got the impression that 'Back To The Farm' was about madness and the farm was an asylum of sorts, so only a madman would play this song at 78RPM. That kind of makes sense to me, but perhaps the more learned Harley scholars on this website could post their interpretation of this song. I'd be very interested to hear.

I would also love to hear from Steve his thoughts and the rationale behind this hidden message. Oh, for an audience with Steve Harley and the questions we would ask!!!

Cheers,
Snowy :)

Snowy, I too ruined a stylus ..... or three ..... searching out hidden messages!! Unlike your good self I never found any. But a fews years later, studying psychology at uni, I tried to make sense of SH's lyrics in relation to his childhood and youth. Read the lyrics of All Men Are Hungry and Red Is A Mean, Mean Colour.....
.......At the end of the day, only Steve knows for sure and he isn't telling, but it made for some fascinating research and conjecture!
Happy Easter everyone B)
